How do I enable index marking on the Nikon D800/D800E?

The D800/D800E has the option to create index markers (index points) while recording video. Index marking helps you locate important frames for later-stage in-camera editing and replay by attaching markers during movie recording. To be able to use it, you first need to assign a button to the function to place markers. You can assign it to the Function, Preview or AE-L button by using the video instruction below.

You can now press the assigned button during movie recording to add an index at the current position. Up to 20 indices can be added to each movie. Movies with indices are indicated by a pin icon when you play them back on the camera.

During replay, markings are indicated along with the progress bar. When playing back on the camera you can use the multi selector to start and stop playback. While playing, use the main command dial to skip to next or previous index, or to skip to the last or first frame if the movie contains no indices.
